Viagra and ED in Frequently Asked Questions. Part 1.
What Is Viagra?
Viagra (sildenafil citrate) is a medication first introduced in 1998 that treats ED by increasing bloodflow to the penis to allow the user to achieve and maintain an erection suitable for sexual intercourse.
How Do Erections Happen?
The human penis contains two cylinder-shaped, sponge-like regions called corpus cavernosa. These regions contain a complex matrix of capillaries. When the brain is sexually aroused, it sends signals to make these regions fill with blood in order to stiffen the penis and produce and erection.
Unfortunately, for a number of reasons, sometimes something goes wrong and the penis does not fill with enough blood or remain erect, and the result is ED.
How Does Viagra Work?
There are a number of possible reasons for ED, but one of the most common is that blood cannot adequately get to the penis due to arterial blockages or constriction. Viagra aids this process by dilating the passageways around the penis to allow increased blood flow to the penis.
When Do I Take Viagra?
Viagra should be taken at least 30-60 minutes prior to sexual intercourse—you do not need to take it every day, only when you are expecting to have sex. You can take Viagra with or without food, but keep in mind that medication is absorbed into the body quicker on an empty stomach.

Can I Take Viagra With Alcohol?
You can take Viagra a few hours after you’ve had some alcohol, but keep in mind that large quantities can counteract or interfere with Viagra as well as cause potentially serious issues with a drop in blood pressure.
Are There Side Effects?
The most serious side effects of Viagra are very rare. Most commonly user experience upset stomach, back pain, indigestion, headache, a slight blue tinge to vision, flushing, and nasal congestion.
Serious side effects include blurred vision or difficulty hearing, chest pain, or an erection lasting more than four hours, also known as priapism. If any of these occur, seek emergency medical help immediately.
